Emerging Technology #3

1. The technology I am exploring is Facebook.

2. Facebook is a social networking website that allow you to interact with friends and family. Facebook is useful in many way. First, It allows you to reconnect with people whom you may not had contact with in a while. Second, you can manage Facebook according to your needs. Some people are only friends with their immediate family, and some people set up special networks of friends (i.e. retired men of the Vietnam War). Finally, you can establish a business site, community site and just a regular user site. The website is very useful and user-friendly.

3. I first started using Facebook 2years ago. My fiance' at the time set up an account for me to get started. The experience was great and I really enjoyed finding old high school friends. Having the opportunity to live in Orange County California, Cleveland, Bloomington and Columbus, Ohio finding old friends was really special. I was amazed at how many people remembered me and what they remembered about me was interesting as well. I recently established a community site for "Journey To Educate." I'm still exploring the community site and what features it has to offer. If you use Facebook for the right reasons I think people would have a good experience.

4. This is what I have established on the community website so far!

5. Tips: Do not feel the need to add someone as your friend just because they "friend request" you several times. Also update general information. Do not put exactly what you are doing. (i.e. I am leaving my home now or on vacation for a month)

Emerging Technology #2

1. The technology I am exploring is srapblog.

2. This online technology allows you to create online photo albums and share the with the public or certain friends. Scrapblog is useful because of the convenience of accessing your personal pictures online. Also you have the ability to create a scrapbook and to choose different themes or background settings.

3. Learning to use this technology was very simple. After you access the webpage scrapblog.com, register to sign-up or sign-in. Next click quickmix then choose your background setting. Finally, upload your pictures. I thought the option of having music with your photos was great! The website is very user-friendly.

4. Come and take a look http://www.scrapblog.com/viewer/viewer.aspx?sbid=2685056

5. Note: This online scrapbook would be perfect for sending mother's day cards, birthday pictures, and much more.

Podcast

1. The technology I explored was Mac's iMovie to create my podcast.

2. According to Wikipedia, "podcasting is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded." A more detailed definition is located on Wikipedia which is very good information. Podcasting allows you to listen and/or see news, music, educational events, and presentations. The tool is useful because it allows you to participate and collaborate without having to be in a designated location. The tool is mostly used today for music and home videos. I believe we will fully embrace this technology once we maximize podcasting use in the education field.

3. My experience about learning to use the technology overall was good. This was my first time posting a podcast to a blog. Initially I used my home computer in which I had much difficulty. To overcome the difficulty I went over a friend's house to use his Mac computer. From that point on everything went very well. The process was very intuitive and simple. I really wanted to sit there and learn alot more.

  • My suggestion would be if this is your first time learning new technologies invest in a Mac computer or if you cannot afford the investment use the Macs at the library.
  • Practice new technologies with iChat and iMovie.

The Journey Begins...

My name is Eric Purnell and I was born in Cleveland, Ohio. I was raised in both Orange County, California & Columbus, Ohio. Following my education at Indiana University, Bloomington I moved to Indianapolis where I have lived for several years now. Indianapolis is where I met my wife, Laura, and we were happily married Novermber 28th, 2009. Excitedly, my wife and I are expecting our first child, a boy! Knowing this we are extatic about life's recent changes and are certainly looking forward to this coming September when our son will be born.

Recently, I purchased a camera with the thought of capturing many new pictures of the baby in mind. Unexpectedly the purchase of the new Cannon Rebel took me on an artistic journey of photography. While spending a significant amount of time taking photos for fun, I also find it to be enjoyable and relaxing. What is true to my heart is making the time to volunteer and assist students in school the best way I can. I have started a non-for-profit before and after school program called, Journey To Educate Today, with the goal of facilitating positive behaviors that strengthen interpersonal relationship.

My overall experience setting up this blog was good. The only problem I came across was I accidentally set up two blogs and am currently trying to figure out how to delete one of them.

Tips: Think of the blog as a building block and ask yourself how blogging will fit into your overall web 2.0 journey. Whether it is for personal or professional gain, incorporate the internet and all it has to offer into into your lifestyle.
